Product Description

The handle on this short starter is a 1 3/4" diameter hardwood ball. The long leg is select hickory with a brass tip to prevent splitting. The short leg is solid brass on all the starters. Both legs are spherically cupped to prevent damage to the ball when loading. Great for those who want the correct size for your caliber.  Wood is treated with an oil rub.  Made in the USA by October Country, a manufacturer of muzzleloading supplies.

    Really like this short starter.

  2. All the products I've ordered from you are the next 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Jul 2023

I recently purchased a flintlock rifle and pistol pair by Mike McHugh, one of the top contemporary makers of fine long rifles. I wanted an authentic and functional set of accoutrements to go with them and allow me to shoot them. I ordered all the things necessary to shoot them from October Country and all your products from ball starters to primers were better than expected. I especially like the eagle-head carved primer, which is not only beautifully done but was also reasonably priced. Thanks so much for a great set of tools that compliment my guns perfectly

Picture shows a starter with finish. Mine came unfinished.
Otherwise it functions fine as a short starter.

  4. Short Starters 5 Star Review

Good execution of a standard and very useful design. A 2" round ball handle with two short start extensions, one about 1" and one about 6" both with dished brass tips. I bought 2, one for 0.36 cal and the other for 0.45 cal and larger. Both work great. I stained and finished them with Birchwood Casey Tru Oil and the not only work great but look and feel great also.
